Playstation / PS3 Repair

August 28th, 2010 · No Comments

If you are one of the many people who forked out 300 or more for your playstation 3, you know all too well the pain of suddenly experiencing problems and needing Playstation / PS3 repair! As game systems have become more and more technologically advanced it is no longer possible to fix game read errors by blowing on the cartridge or into the player. That is a nod to the original Nintendo and other cartridge type games for those too young to understand the reference! Anymore you need a scientific degree to fix an errant game system. There are a few common fixes you can try at home however.

The warranty will be the first thing you should consider. They last about a year, and if you’re still under warranty then make sure you take it back. If you don’t then you’re going to have to do things yourself or send it off and pay more money. Warranties will extend to mechanical defects that lead to malfunction. However, spilling your coke on the gaming console doesn’t count.

If the machine is outside of the warranty time frame you can proceed with do it yourself fixes, but keep in mind if you turn a screw on the system, you will void any warranty so check your paperwork. Sony will be able to tell if you have cracked the case on the unit so do not assume you can carefully dismantle it and put it back together.

One of the most common problems with the original release Playstation 3 is what is known as the yellow light of death. If your system is coming on but nothing is displaying on the screen, look at the front LED light, if it is yellow you have a serious hardware failure. There is little you can do for this problem, this system is so powerful with a motherboard, CPU and graphics interface built together things get pretty hot inside the unit. Heat eventually weakens the solder on the motherboard resulting in cracks and disconnects. This will require professional repair assistance.

If the system comes on and doesn’t work, but the yellow isn’t there, chances are you just need to reset it. This can be done by pressing and holding the power button for about 20 seconds. You will hear 3 beeps in between, and after you release it the Playstation 3 should come on again.

Sometimes there is corrupted data in your hard drive. When this happens it simply needs a clean sweep to get things back to normal. Freezing up can be the issue here, which could happen while trying to play DVD movies, or even Blue Ray discs. The easy fix is to find a hard drive format. Just make sure you back up all the data before formatting it. You have to remember that this is just like erasing everything on a computer.

There are some common playstation 3 repairs you can do at home. Just remember to check your warranty details before attempting any of the above. Sometimes there will simply be nothing you can do on your own, and your best bet will be to consult a professional. If you are very gifted in this area, you can find spare parts for your broken system in many places on the internet.

Many Playstation 3 owners take the time to invest in repair manuals that contain many tips and tricks to making your game system function again. These manuals range from simple cleaning and reset options to more in depth Playstation / PS3 repair. The best option is a manual that contains a little of both!
