This has been an interesting year for the NBA playoffs, with both entertaining series and lackluster matchups taking place. Here is a brief glance at what’s happened if you haven’t been watching.
In the first round of the playoffs, there were four compelling matchups. The Magic faced the Bobcats, the Hawks vs. the Bucks, the Cavs played the Bulls and the Celtics played the Heat. I was most excited for the Magic/Bobcats series because I felt a spoiler for an overachieving (or so I thought) Magic team. Turns out the Magic were to be taken seriously and blasted through the Bobcats in 4 games.
The Cavs beat the Bulls 4-1, and it never really felt close. King James declared his royalty in this series. I wish the Bulls put up more of a fight, because I would have loved to see Lebron tested at some point in this year’s playoffs. Sadly, that day never came.
The Celtics and Heat had the writings of a great matchup, Wade vs. the Big Three. Apparently Wade is content with his 1 championship ring and I don’t see him getting close to an NBA finals again, unless the Heat management stirs the pot this offseason. The Celtics took this one in 5 games.
Surprisingly, the best matchup of this series ended up being the Milwaukee Bucks vs. the Atlanta Hawks. The Bucks are a quietly dangerous team and Brandon Jennings has a bright future in Milwaukee. This was the only series that went to 7 games and the Hawks were fortunate to win, but that’s where their playoff fortunes would end.
In the second round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, the Orlando Magic faced the Atlanta Hawks. Apparently Atlanta was content with their victory over the Bucks, because they didn’t even show up for this one. It was an embarrassing display, losing 4-0 to the Magic and all but assuring Joe Johnson’s departure from Atlanta.
The Cavs and the Celtics faced off on the other side of town, in a pretty good series. The Cavs went up 2-1, but then proceeded the next three games. Cavs fans everywhere began to panic, because it is very possibly that King James will leave Cleveland this offseason. If they can’t even make it to the Eastern Conference finals, he doesn’t have a shot to win.
And here we are in the Eastern Conference finals, with another boring matchup between the Magic and the Celtics. The Magic somehow managed to avoid the sweep, but their just delaying the inevitable. The Celtics will be in the finals next week.
