If your aim is to get a character to level 525 and Illustrious as a Blacksmith, then I have a few ideas on how you might do this as quickly and efficiently as possible. Of course, you’ll need a character at level 450 and ready to go before the Cataclysm expansion hits.

Here are my top 3 tips for making sure you are ready to make the most of your profession as soon as the Cataclysm hits.

1 – Collect Saronite and Titanium. Early in the levelling process from 450 to 525 it is very likely that a great deal of this will be needed. It is also possible that players will soon be selling it off cheaply thinking that it will soon be redundant.

However, the first 10 or 20 items you craft to get to perhaps 440 or 445 will more than likely need a great amount of the existing minerals. You will get a head start in the race to 525 Blacksmithing and Illustrious this way.

2 – Levelling you Blacksmith to character level 85 is very important. High end quest, reputation, dailies etc. will all help you gain the recipes and experience you need to craft at the highest level.

3 – Have a miner at level maximum level as well. If it’s not the same character as your blacksmith then level two up as quickly as possible. A Blacksmith paying for his own material, especially in the first few weeks after a new expansion is a very expensive way to do things.

I’ll use Saronite as the example. For the three or four weeks after Wrath of the Lich King hit the shops Saronite was fetching over 100g a stack (some servers record almost 180g a stack). It now fetches rarely more than 26g, and that’s what vendors will give you! Having a level 525 illustrious miner will be vital.

If you want to take advantage of the window of opportunity to make gold on new craft able Blacksmith items after Cataclysm – you don’t want to be buying the materials at the massive over cost that they will be for the first month or two.
