The Reason We Play Brain Games And Teasers

June 7th, 2010 · No Comments

What is it about brain games that keeps us playing them? Well, the answer to that question is easy to figure out if you know a little about gaming philosophy. What keeps us playing games in the first place is the fact that they allow us to challenge ourselves and develop and hone our abilities in a safe environment, where the only negative consequence to failure is, well, failure itself.

If you’re a video gamer and you play, say, online shooters, you train your reflex time as well as your ability to formulate attack strategies and you may even develop some leadership abilities along the way. If you’re a Chess player, that’s pure strategy, but you also learn a little something about psychology, you learn how people fall for the tricks they fall for, what sort of bait people find irresistible.

With these brain training games, we train the mind. Of course, when we say that, that could include everything. Don’t we train the mind in baseball? Doesn’t boxing have an element of strategy to it? So… For the purposes of this article, we’re only discussing the games that SOLELY train the mind. Games like sudoku, brain teasers and so on, rather than games where training the mind is only one aspect.

These games are easy to pick up, in fact, difficult NOT to pick up, because of their easy playability. Anyone can play them. We might not all be young enough to throw the pigskin around, we might not all have the reaction time to make the most of a video game, but if you have a brain, you can play games to challenge it. It’s a challenge we can all put ourselves to.

These brain games will keep your mind fresh and the older you get, this becomes more and more important. Around retirement age, when you finally get to quit your day job and spend your time as you please, you want something to keep you aware between vacations.

Beyond keeping you aware at mind, these games can also help you to improve your problem solving abilities. You can develop near super human wit by sharpening your mind against some good, challenging brain games.

So however old you are, no matter how smart you THINK you are, the fact is that if you have a brain, there are games out there to challenge it. These games are fun, challenging, sometimes they’re quite frustrating, and they make you smarter!
